I am a registered Counsellor at the Council for Counsellors in South Africa. Counselling is a gift and an investment to yourself. Our lives are not perfect and no one’s life is. Though if we choose not to take action then our suffering becomes more intense and life's demands becomes challenging. If we are willing to go on an adventure of self-discovery then we start to discover the deep satisfaction which change brings. The more we change, the more flow we create in our lives. Therefore counselling is about bringing change to your current situations, circumstances, beliefs, etc. I make use of tools and techniques which I have learned through the years of my own healing journey. Counselling is a safe and a sacred space to discover the depths of your own power but it is also a safe space to discover the depths of your pain as well. There is no right and wrong in this space because what is right for me is maybe wrong for you. So I am not here to choose your healing path for you, I am here to walk your healing path with you as your path is unique to you. I will guide you to walk on your path fearlessly and bravely. When you start to stand in your power you will love all of who you are and all of who you are becoming. Risk, be brave, I am ready to meet you when you are ready. I am not here to force your path, but I do request a willingness and a commitment toward yourself. My intention is to walk with you every step of the way until you can walk alone. Sometimes vital things happens and we fall and I will be available to pick you up and to help you to stand high even in the darkest times as I know the dark times in our lives is the sign posts to our greatness.
We all try to run away from our traumas through forgetting, denying, blaming, and many more escape routs. Your trauma will keep finding you when you least expect it to arise. You cannot hate the trauma or the person or the event which created the trauma, as hate brings resentment, regret and blame. The only way to heal trauma is to work through it, then your trauma will become your wisdom, your understanding and your compassion. You will only understand the gift of trauma once you have worked through it.
Trauma recovery deals with reviving trauma to enable survivors to integrate the trauma into their lives. In order to achieve healing, they have to reject their notions that they are dysfunctional and different. Healing is said to begin when these persons start to reconnect with their strengths, identify defenses that previously kept them “locked into” the trauma and find ways to dismantling these defenses.
Trauma counselling is largely a process whereby traumatized people are enabled to work through their tribulation memories to the point where they feel better. While they might never be able to forget their most painful experiences, they may reach a point where they are able to have these recollections without feeling overwhelmed or seriously disturbed. Unless survivors have an opportunity to address their feelings regarding their abuse, these feelings may have an impact on their relationships with friends, lovers and their children, their self-esteem, their relationships with their bodies and their career performance.
The goal in recovery is to enable the survivor to achieve “ordinary levels of effective functioning”, which would be:
·The ability to give energy to everyday life.
·Experiencing psychological comfort, instead of constantly experiencing pain and distress.
·The ability to experience gratification – to enjoy life’s pleasures when they occur.
·Developing hopefulness regarding the future; being able to make plans for the future, and displaying a commitment to these plans.
